Hospital on schedule for 2023 groundbreaking, 2025 opening
King of Prussia, PA and Grand Rapids, MI (February 21, 2023) — Southridge Behavioral Hospital, the joint venture partnership between Universal Health Services (NYSE: UHS) and Trinity Health Michigan, reports today that building design is progressing and the facility is on schedule to open in 2025. The land for the new facility has been acquired at 2145 64th Street SW, near the Trinity Health Medical Center in Byron Center, Michigan. Groundbreaking is anticipated for summer 2023.
The new website — www.southridgebh.com — provides the community a view of what’s to come for the behavioral health hospital, including an informational video and renderings of the hospital.
“We are excited for the future opening of Southridge Behavioral Hospital, because we know there is an incredible need for inpatient services in our community,” said Matt Biersack, M.D., president of Trinity Health Grand Rapids. “The acquisition of the land and design development are key milestones to making our vision a reality. We are excited to break ground this year, when we will really begin to see the hospital take shape.”
“We are proud to celebrate this new partnership with Trinity Health. Our mutual goal is to provide patients and their loved ones with high-quality, compassionate services and support,” said Matt Peterson, President, Behavioral Health Division, Universal Health Services. “With the construction of this new hospital, we expect to alleviate emergency department capacity strains, operate an efficient behavioral health facility and effectively address the increasing needs of the behavioral health population.”
Once open, the new Southridge Behavioral Hospital will accommodate up to 96 beds, serving adult and geriatric patients. Southridge Behavioral Hospital will employ approximately 170 full-time and part-time staff including physicians, nurses, therapists, mental health technicians, administration, dietary and housekeeping personnel. Programming will be tailored to individual patient needs, with core psychiatric services and counseling supplemented with art therapy, music therapy and outdoor activities.
Network of Affiliated Behavioral Health Services
As previously announced, Southridge Behavioral Hospital will tie seamlessly into a growing network of affiliated behavioral health services in the area, including UHS-operated Forest View Hospital and Trinity Health Michigan's partnership with Network180 to open a Behavioral Health Crisis Center for the rapid availability of assessment services on a walk-in basis. Further, Southridge Behavioral Hospital will provide additional provider and patient choice in the market, specifically at an easily accessible location south of Grand Rapids.
