Universal Health Services Holds Beam Topping Ceremony and Reveals Brand Name for New Behavioral Hospital: Three Trails Behavioral Hospital

King of Prussia, PA (July 16, 2025) – Earlier today, Universal Health Services (NYSE: UHS) and Construction Partner DeAngelis Diamond held a ceremonial beam topping event and revealed the brand name for the new Behavioral Hospital under construction at 20501 E. 42nd Street South in Independence, MO, 64055. The beam topping ceremony is an age-old tradition in which the last beam is placed on a construction project. This marks a major milestone for everyone on the project, and it signifies the countless hours poured into the building.
The new Brand name was revealed to positive reaction. The name Three Trails was selected to honor the historical significance of the city of Independence, Missouri, as the starting point for the Santa Fe, Oregon and California Trails. The logo icon is a compass, which is symbolic of wayfinding, and metaphorically the personal journey to recovery.
“This beam topping is an important milestone toward the opening of Three Trails Behavioral Hospital,” said Shelah Adams, AVP, Corporate Development, UHS. “It is a visual representation of our commitment to bring much-needed behavioral health care services for the community. We are proud to see the hospital take shape and look forward to its opening in 2026.”
“The name Three Trails Behavioral Hospital is incredibly fitting,” said Mayor Rory Rowland of the City of Independence. “This building, and the City of Independence, will be an important and life-changing step for people embarking on a new trail of mental health. It is no secret the United States and the Kansas City Metro area lack behavioral health options. We are proud to be a part of the solution to the mental health crisis impacting so many people and their families.”
“The beam topping symbolizes that we are one step closer to bringing this new hospital to life and thereby serving the behavioral health needs of this community,” said Adam Milner, Project Executive of construction partner DeAngelis Diamond. “The commitment, energy and enthusiasm of the entire team working on this project is palpable and electric. This passion will carry through when the hospital opens and patients are served.”
On track to open in late 2026, the new Three Trails Behavioral Hospital will accommodate up to 120 beds, serving all ages – adults, seniors, adolescents and children. When fully operational, the hospital will employ approximately 200 full-time and part-time staff including physicians, nurses, therapists, mental health technicians, administration, dietary and housekeeping personnel. Programming will be tailored to individual patient needs, with core psychiatric services and counseling supplemented with art therapy, music therapy and outdoor activities.
