Patriot Support Program Expands Board

UHS welcomed four new members to the Patriot Support Program Advisory Board in 2023, including: The Honorable David Shulkin, MD, Former Secretary of Veterans Affairs; Lieutenant General (Ret) Bruce Green MD, MPH, United States Air Force; Rear Admiral (Ret) Bruce Gillingham, MD, United States Navy; and Chief Master Sergeant (Ret) Charles Cole, United States Air Force. These four join Major General (Ret) Jerry L. Fenwick, U.S. Air Force and Air National Guard, who came on to the Advisory Board in October 2022 following his retirement after 35 years of service.

Employing Our Military Heroes

UHS is a member company supporting the Veteran Jobs Mission, the leading private-sector solution addressing U.S. military veteran unemployment. The Veteran Jobs Mission began in 2011 as a coalition of 11 leading companies committed to hiring 100,000 veterans by 2020. Since then, the coalition has evolved to more than 315 private-sector companies representing virtually every industry of the U.S. economy. The Veteran Jobs Mission coalition has collectively hired more than 900,000 veterans since it began.

As a result of this great early success, and due to the significant contributions veterans have made to the companies that have hired them, the Veteran Jobs Mission has raised its goal to hiring 1 million U.S. military veterans.

Beyond their ongoing search for top military talent, Veteran Jobs Mission members are continuing to increase their focus on retention and career development of veterans in the private sector. This includes supporting veterans as they adapt to the workplace by establishing sponsorship and on-boarding training programs, as well as industry-based coalition subgroups to increase collaboration among members.

Expanding Needed Services

The sacrifices made by our men and women in uniform and their families may have far-reaching, lifelong implications to health and well-being. This is particularly true with regard to treating the often invisible, but increasingly prevalent, behavioral health needs of active duty service members and veterans.

The Patriot Support Program, established by UHS in 2001, was born out of a great need: to support the U.S. Department of Defense and Veterans Administration (VA) in providing much needed behavioral health services for military, veterans and their families. The strain of multiple deployments and separations has worn greatly on the bodies, minds and spirits of service members. It is not uncommon for active duty service members and veterans to struggle with depression, post-traumatic stress (PTS), addiction or other behavioral health issues. The Patriot Support Program gives back to the service members who have risked their safety and well-being so that we can enjoy the rights, liberties and opportunities granted by our nation.

“At graduation, I was commissioned in the U.S. Army and served in the 77th Infantry Division. UHS’ commitment to military members and their families, for me, is very personal.” – Alan B. Miller, UHS Founder and Executive Chairman

Network of Treatment Centers

In response to the present and growing need for high quality, intensive behavioral health services, UHS developed a network of treatment centers, support staff and medical professionals dedicated to treating active duty service members and veterans. Our multidisciplinary teams work closely with installation personnel and VA resources to help patients achieve established treatment goals.

We have spent the last several years expanding the locations and resources dedicated to military-specific behavioral health services. Currently, 20 UHS behavioral health facilities operate a unit (or units) with an emphasis on maintaining close communication with the appropriate command infrastructure. The goal of all facilities is to return all service members to full duty with honor. There are additional facilities who serve children and adolescents of active service members and veterans.
