Specialty hospital expands access to inpatient and outpatient mental health treatment across Iowa

Clive Behavioral HealthDES MOINES (February 22, 2021) — Clive Behavioral Health, a new 100-bed hospital, opened today in Clive, Iowa. The facility will initially offer inpatient behavioral health services for adults. Clive Behavioral will continue to open units and add further services in a phased approach through 2021. Services for children and adolescents will begin in summer 2021. Clive Behavioral will be the first freestanding behavioral health hospital in central Iowa, and the largest in Iowa overall.

The new facility is a partnership between Universal Health Services (UHS) and MercyOne. “We are pleased to reflect the collaboration of two premier health care systems to provide these critically needed services in Iowa,” said Mary Thompson, CEO, Clive Behavioral Health. “Many individuals in our community have been touched by or are suffering with mental health challenges. Our goal is to provide patients and their loved ones with high quality and compassionate behavioral health services.”

Karl Keeler, president, MercyOne Central Iowa, said, “MercyOne is proud to welcome Clive Behavioral Health to our community. In partnership with UHS, this hospital adds to the MercyOne legacy of providing personalized, excellent behavioral health care in inpatient and outpatient settings and through our graduate medical education psychiatric residency program. We look forward to collaborating with the Clive Behavioral team as we all work toward well-being for every individual and family.”

Mary Thompson added, “Clive Behavioral is grateful for the outpouring of support and good wishes extended during our construction and opening.” Clive Mayor Scott Cirksena and the Clive City Council and leadership team provided encouragement and assistance from the beginning of the Clive Behavioral project in 2018. Mayor Cirksena said, “On behalf of the Clive City Council, I welcome you to our community. Its time now to get beyond stigma. Its time now to reach out to the men, women and children of this great state with your healing help. The City of Clive couldn’t be more excited to partner with you in this work.”

Other state and local leaders across Iowa expressed support and praise for the opening of Clive Behavioral. Governor Kim Reynolds said, “I’m pleased to congratulate the team at Clive Behavioral Health on the opening of this remarkable facility. This hospital is a shining example of how Iowa is making tremendous strides in creating a network of behavioral healthcare. And, it conveys our belief that everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and respect on their path to wellness.”

Peggy Huppert, President of the National Alliance on Mental Illness-Iowa (NAMI Iowa), said, “NAMI Iowa is thrilled to welcome Clive Behavioral Health to the mix of mental health providers in our state. It is badly needed and enthusiastically received. NAMI Iowa’s goal is for every Iowan to receive the help they need, when they need it. The opening of this facility will go a long way toward making that goal a reality.”

The new facility is located at 1450 NW 114th Street in Clive and features:

  • 100 beds in a state-of-the-art building spanning 83,000 square-feet;
  • six distinct 16- and 18-bed units, including future dedicated units for children and adolescents;
  • dedicated space for intensive day programs and outpatient care; and
  • a gymnasium and outdoor recreation areas to encourage full well-being.

Dr. Sasha Khosravi, Chief Medical Officer, Clive Behavioral, emphasized the special care taken in designing the hospital to create a patient-focused environment. He said, “The hospital is full of light and has beautiful indoor and outdoor spaces designed to promote healing and overall well-being.
